You may have heard us talking about the Informz Superfan Summit in Virginia on November 15th. But, have you heard that for the first time ever, we are offering 4 pre-conference workshops including the session; Email Design Bootcamp: How to Create a Design that Converts.
From best practice coding to designing, you will be walking away with many tools to make your emails look great. We are going to spell out A LOT about email design in the 2-and-a-half-hour session. I personally am pumped up because I am being given the opportunity to share these concepts in an all new format – half presentation, half hands-on work, and 100% digital design leveling up! I’m also excited to see all those friendly client faces that I’ve worked with over the past 3+ years, as well as meet people that I have yet to have the pleasure! Alright, enough about what I’m looking forward to and more about what you can look forward to.
This workshop is essential if you want to master any of the following:
- The challenges that come along with designing emails. It’s good to know the challenges that lie ahead so when they are encountered, you will be ready. Know and respect the challenges to email design!
- Common design patterns and techniques for creating great-looking content. Great design has been established and we’re exposed to it in massive quantities each day. Climb on the shoulders of giants and start making your emails look as great as they can possibly be.
- How to hand-draw email design mock-ups like a pro. Getting a hand-drawn mock up together is a great first step in designing an all new piece of email communication. If you “can’t draw,” don’t worry – this isn’t figure drawing class. We will be drawing bare bones mock ups with symbols representing common elements found in email designs. This will illustrate where the common design patterns appear and will help you quickly understand how to integrate them in your organizations communications.
- How to hand-code HTML for email design. This is where the magic happens, and you will walk away with the tools to be a pro in this regard. If you “can’t code,” no worries. You’ll get your start in this email design session. Hopefully the voice in your head that you are imagining I possess as you read this blog is calming enough to eliminate fear of code. If my calming blog voice is not dispelling your fears of code, spend some time with this little fella.
- Developing an understanding on how to resolve common email rendering issues. Even the pros run into these every now and again. The pros know how to fix them. Fear not, for you’ll walk away a pro (or at least a semi-pro.) There are roughly 10 rendering issues that most people face and we’re going to stare each one straight into their eyes. Do you hear that? That is the sound of email rendering issues shaking in fear of their demise. Be afraid rendering issues. Be very afraid.
- Avoiding rendering issues that cannot be fixed. Some rendering issues are unrelated to the HTML code and are the result of not using best practices. We’ll be going over this family of troublemakers and will plot our digital design course in such a way to avoid having to meet these issues on our quest towards email design greatness.
- Developing an understanding of responsive design and mobile friendly design. Buzz word alert! We will go through both of these concepts, discussing how they get implemented. You will be able to have a conversation on these topics and will be able to make recommendations on why either path may be appropriate. And you’ll get to start throwing around buzz words.
- How responsive design works. We will level up our coding abilities and discuss the HTML/CSS components that go into responsive design. Hopefully you read that in my calm blog voice that we discussed a couple of bullets above, so that you have no fear of implementing responsive design yourself. It is easy, after all.
- Strategies to be efficient on the design/coding front. We will summarize our strategies into a multi-step plan, to make sure your next email design endeavor goes smoothly. Without efficiency and strategies on the design/coding front, you run the risk of having a mediocre email design. We’re not after “mediocre at best” designs. “Superb” designs are what we’re shooting for. “Righteous” designs are what we’ll end up with. If you slack off in the session, unfortunately I can only guarantee that you’ll be capable of “Really really great” designs. Consider that my session disclaimer!
- And more! 2016 is nearly half over. Who knows if more rendering issues or design topics will need to be addressed? We’ll be watching the trends and will be sure to keep you updated when the summit comes. The bottom line is that we are going to have a lot of fun with this session, and we are going to pack it with everything you need on your journey towards success.
At the end of the session, you will discover that you are the email design superhero for your organization. Or email design supervillain, if anti-hero is more your vibe. No matter the ethical choice you make with your new email design powers – you’ll be darn good with all sorts of email design stuff!
