Today we are switching up our typical Informally post to branch outside of Informz and chat with Nick Westergaard, strategist, speaker and author as well as our keynote speaker at the Informz Users Conference in November! We’re talking about why you should be excited about the Informz Conference, why marketers need to get scrappy, oh and the best show of all time.

We are so excited to have you as our keynote speaker! Can you tell our clients why THEY should be excited to hear you at the Informz Users Conference?

I’m excited to be your keynote speaker! Corny as it sounds, that’s a good reason for all of us to be excited. I love marketing and, more than anything, I love speaking to marketers and providing both mind-blowing insights as well as practical, tactical tips for improving your branding and marketing. I spend all of my time teaching, consulting, speaking, and writing about this and I’m excited to share with you. In the end, you’ll learn, laugh, and leave with ideas you can implement right away.

You wrote the book Get Scrappy: Smarter Digital Marketing for Businesses Big and Small. Why Scrappy?

Every marketer — regardless of the size of their organization, resources, etc. — is looking for ways to do more with less. When I was meeting with the marketing team from Schwinn Cycles talking about “scrappy” their marketing manager said, “We could all use a few people and a few dollars more.” Everyone needs to get scrappy with their marketing today — both online and off. I wanted to create a book that would help marketers get smart, do more with less, and simplify their marketing for the long haul. In the end, both the book and my talk should leave you with a reliable, repeatable system for rethinking marketing as marketing rethinks itself.

What is your favorite thing about marketing?

That there’s never been a better time to be in marketing! It’s crazy and so much is changing BUT… if we all do our jobs right we can create content and conversations that connect our community in ways never before possible. We can build close personal relationships. That said, too many are treating new media like traditional media and just blasting at their customers because they don’t know any better.

Describe your typical work day in three words.

In a home office with five kids ranging in age from 3 to 16. My three words? Flexible, flexible, FLEXIBLE!

What is your favorite quote?

“Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend. Inside of a dog it’s too dark to read.” – Groucho Marx. I love Groucho, I love dogs and books, and I have a sense of humor.

What is your favorite TV show of all time?

This is applicable because of where we’ll be for the Informz Users Conference but The West Wing. It’s my favorite show of all time. I’m a political junkie and the dialogue in that show is some of the best ever. I’m actually currently listening to the West Wing Weekly podcast and going back through and watching every episode with it.

Where is your favorite place to vacation?

It’s not so much a specific place but rather a type of place. While we take a lot of intense vacations to busy places like Disney, I’m also a huge fan of renting a big house on a lake or the ocean where we can just chill out for a few days. Cook, eat, talk, and have fun. Those are my favorite things. We’ve done this at Cape Cod, MA, Door County, WI, and this July in Duluth, MN.

What is your most-visited social media site?

Instagram. I’m a visual person and I love to create content. Instagram is the perfect convergence of all of this.

If you had to spend a day not using any technology, what would you do?

Read! Honestly this is why I love airline flights. Unlike driving I can be a passive passenger and can unplug for a bit. It’s a great time to catch up on my reading. Incidentally, as someone who works in digital marketing looking at screens all day, I still love paper books.

Where do you most want to travel, but have never been?

London! I’m a huge anglophile and have never been. I’ve done a fair amount of international traveling but I’ve never been to London.

Thanks, Nick! It was great to learn a bit more about you and we cannot wait to see you at the Informz Users Conference!

Will we see YOU at the Informz Users Conference? Don’t forget to register!
